Life Begins at Eighty
Bing Xin
Dear Friends:
Every day as I lie here on my sickbed I see in front of me a very beautiful picture. It is a picture of a beaming child in red holding a pair of large peaches. At the side of the picture are inscribed the words, “Congratulations on Comrade Bing Xin’s Eightieth Birthday,” and at he bottom the words, “Greetings from Children’s Literature October 1980.”
Waking early every morning, gazing at this picture in the bright rays of the sun gives me happiness and encouragement. The mere word “eighty” simply cannot convince me that I really am eighty years old!
After I fell ill, many old friends wrote to me. Some of the letters were comforting, and some reproachful, saying, “Now you will no longer be able to refuse to devote yourself to the aged!” I replied to one friend: “Confucius once said that he often felt that he ‘did not know when old age would arrive,’ whereas I am in the position of ‘not knowing’ that I do not know that old age has already arrived!”
This ignoramus wishes to thank her thousands of young readers. Ever since I wrote Letters to My Litter Readers at the age of twenty-three, I have been writing continuously for nearly sixty years. It is the Letters to My Little Readers that has kept me feeling forever young.
During my illness, the editorial department of China Youth magazine not only sent me flowers, they also came and took a photograph of me. In addition, I received many letters of sympathy. All these good wishes convinced me that I would soon get better. My illness was the result of a blood clot on the brain. In addition, I fell and fractured my right hip, so I find moving and writing very difficult. In fact, it has taken me half an hour to write these few words. But I hope to be fully recovered in 1981, and then I will again get busy writing for my young friends. In the West there is a saying which goes, “Life begins at forty.” I hope that in 1981, after I recover from my illness, I will again practice writing and walking. Life begins at eighty. I will do my best to forge ahead, alongside my young friends.
I wish you health and happiness.
Your loving friend Bing Xin

W.B. Yeats - Sailing to Byzantium
THAT is no country for old men. The young
In one another's arms, birds in the trees
- Those dying generations - at their song,
The salmon-falls, the mackerel-crowded seas,
Fish, flesh, or fowl, commend all summer long
Whatever is begotten, born, and dies.
Caught in that sensual music all neglect
Monuments of unageing intellect.
An aged man is but a paltry thing,
A tattered coat upon a stick, unless
Soul clap its hands and sing, and louder sing
For every tatter in its mortal dress,
Nor is there singing school but studying
Monuments of its own magnificence;
And therefore I have sailed the seas and come
To the holy city of Byzantium.
O sages standing in God's holy fire
As in the gold mosaic of a wall,
Come from the holy fire, perne in a gyre,
And be the singing-masters of my soul.
Consume my heart away; sick with desire
And fastened to a dying animal
It knows not what it is; and gather me
Into the artifice of eternity.
Once out of nature I shall never take
My bodily form from any natural thing,
But such a form as Grecian goldsmiths make
Of hammered gold and gold enamelling
To keep a drowsy Emperor awake;
Or set upon a golden bough to sing
To lords and ladies of Byzantium
Of what is past, or passing, or to come.
树上的鸟,正从事他们的歌唱;
皮囊的每个裂绽唱得更响亮;
供给瞌睡的皇帝保持清醒;

Love's Secret
by William Blake
Never seek to tell thy love,
Love that never told can be;
For the gentle wind does move
Silently, invisibly.
I told my love, I told my love,
I told her all my heart;
Trembling, cold, in ghastly fears,
Ah! she did depart!
Soon as she was gone from me,
A traveler came by,
Silently, invisibly,
He took her with a sigh.
爱永远不能被说出来;
我向她倾诉了我的衷肠;

Autumn in Peiping
Yu Dafu
Autumn, wherever it is, always has something to recommend itself. In North China, however, it is particularly limpid, serene and melancholy. To enjoy its atmosphere to the full in the onetime capital, I have, therefore, made light of travelling a long distance from Hanghou to Qingdao, and thence to Peiping.
There is of course autumn in the South too, but over there plants wither slowly, the air is moist, the sky pallid, and it is more often rainy than windy. While muddling along all by myself among the urban dwellers of Suzhou, Shanghai, Xianmen, Hong Kong or Guangzhou, I feel nothing but a little chill in the air, without ever relishing to my heart's content the flavour, colour, mood and style of the season. Unlike famous flowers which are most attractive when half opening, good wine which is most tempting when one is half drunk, autumn, however, is best appreciated in its entirety.
It is more than a decade since I last saw autumn in North. When I am in the South, the arrival of each autumn will put me in mind of Peiping's Tao Ran Ting with its reed catkins, Diao Yu Tai with its shady willow trees, Western Hills with their chirping insects, Yu Quan Shan Mountain on a moonlight evening and Tan Zhe Si with its reverbrating bell. Suppose you put up in a humble rented house inside the bustling imperial city, you can, on getting up at dawn, sit in your courtyard sipping a cup of strong tea, leisurely watch the high azure skies and listen to pigeons circling overhead. Saunter eastward under locust trees to closely observe streaks of sunlight filtering through their foliage, or quietly watch the trumpet-shaped blue flowers of morning glories climbing half way up a dilapidated wall, and an intense feeling of autumn will of itself well up inside you. As to morning glories, I like their blue or white flowers best, dark purple ones second best, and pink ones third best. It will be most desirable to have them set off by some tall thin grass planted underneath here and there. Locust trees in the North, as a decorative embellishment of nature, also associate us with autumn. On getting up early in the morning, you will find the ground strewn all over with flower-like pistils fallen from locust trees. Quiet and smellless, they feel tiny and soft underfoot. After a street cleaner has done the sweeping under the shade of the trees, you will discover countless lines left by his broom in the dust, which look so fine and quiet that somehow a feeling of forlornness will begin to creep up on you. The same depth of implication is found in the ancient saying that a single fallen leaf from the wutong tree is more than enough to inform the world of autumn's presence.
The sporadic feeble chirping of cicadas is especially characteristic of autumn in the North. Due to the abundance of trees and the low altitude of dwellings in Peiping, cicadas are audible in every nook and cranny of the city. In the South, however, one cannot hear them unless in suburbs or hills. Because of their ubiquitous shrill noise, these insects in Peiping seem to be living off every household like crickets or mice. As for autumn rains in the North, they also seem to differ from those in the South, being more appealing, more temperate.
A sudden gust of cool wind under the slaty sky, and raindrops will start pitter-pattering. Soon when the rain is over, the clouds begin gradually to roll towards the west and the sun comes out in the blue sky. Some idle townsfolk, wearing lined or unlined clothing made of thick cloth, will come out pipe in mouth and, loitering under a tree by the end of a bridge, exchange leisurely conversation with acquaintances with a slight touch of regret at the passing of time:
“Oh, real nice and cool - ”
“Sure! Getting cooler with each autumn shower!”
Fruit trees in the North also make a wonderful sight in autumn. Take jujube tree for example. They grow everywhere - around the corner of a house, at the foot of a wall, by the side of a latrine or outside a kitchen door. It is at the height of autumn that jujubes, shaped like dates or pigeon eggs, make their appearance in a light yellowish-green amongst tiny elliptic leaves. By the time when they have turned ruddy and the leaves fallen, the north-westerly wind will begin to reign supreme and make a dusty world of the North. Only at the turn of July and August when jujubes, persimmons, grapes are 80-90 percent ripe will the North have the best of autumn - the golden days in a year.
Some literary critics say that Chinese literati, especially poets, are mostly disposed to be decadent, which accounts for predominance of Chinese works singing the praises of autumn. Well, the same is true of foreign poets, isn't it? I haven't read much of foreign poetry and prose, nor do I want to enumerate autumn-related poems and essays in foreign literature. But, if you browse through collected works of English, German, French or Italian poets, or various countries' anthologies of poetry or prose, you can always comes across a great many literary pieces eulogizing or lamenting autumn. Long pastoral poems or songs about the four seasons by renowned poets are mostly distinguished by beautiful moving lines on autumn. All that goes to show that all live creatures and sensitive humans alike are prone to the feeling of depth, remoteness, severity and bleakness. Not only poets, even convicts in prison, I suppose, have deep sentiments in autumn in spite of themselves.
Autumn treats all humans alike, regardless of nationality, race or class. However, judging from Chinese idiom qiushi (autumn scholar, meaning and aged scholar grieving over frustrations in his life) and frequent selection in textbooks of Ouyang Xiu's On the Autumn Sough and Su Dongpo's On the Red Cliff, Chinese men of letters seem to be particularly autumn-minded. But, to know the real flavour of autumn, especially China's autumn, one has to visit the North.
Autumn in the South also has its unique features, such as the moonlit Ershisi Bridge in Yangzhou, the flowing sea tide at the Qiantangjiang River, the mist-shrouded Putuo Mountain and lotuses at the Lizhiwan Bay. But they all lack strong colour and lingering flavour. Southern autumn is to Northern autumn what yellow rice wine is to kaoliang wine, congee to steamed buns, perches to crabs, yellow dogs to camels.
Autumn, I mean Northern autumn, if only it could be made to last forever! I would be more than willing to keep but one-third of my life-span and have two-thirds of it bartered for the prolonged stay of the season!

Independent Thoughts
Ba Jin
The text, “On Independent Thought” of Xuan Zhu has set me thinking a little bit.
Nowadays, we all do not know how to think independently, do we? Don’t we unlearn how to thinkin an independent way?
I think: no, we have not forgotten to think independently.
The problem is, that some are not used to “thinking differently”, and they are also not used to thefact, that others have independent thoughts. They are wrapped up in layers like coats and theymay also wrap up others. They take out the stick of dogmatism, patrol with it everywhere, and ifthey see somebody piercing his coat, they hit him hard. They are not satisfied and cannot fallasleep in their coats, before they not hear from everywhere that usual emotionless talk.
Their sticks have generated a kind of public opinion, and created a chorus of yes-men, thatobviously have loud voices and really could drown out everything. But these sticks were not ableto stop the ability of the people to think independently. Actually, among these monotonousremarks there have always been different voices, but the dogmatists haven’t heard them or simplydon’t want to hear them. Some editors have already gotten used to a life in coats. They do notrest, until they have revised your essay so often that it fits into the coats, only then they are willingto publish it. But the authors of those essays still want to pierce through their coats as usual. Apowerful hit will perhaps be effective already for the first time. To avoid the second one, theydodge in ahead-running obediently. Everyone knows, that people are living human being, andtherefore, the “independent thought” cannot be represented by dogmatists.
Most people can still think independently in China. They have their own opinions on everything. Inno way would they come to terms with the cast that other people thought for them, but they arealso not used to expressing their opinions publicly. Instead of this, they like to chatter in the dark,which has the opposite effect. It helps the exaggerating of the dogmatists. Therefore, the slogan ofthe “free completion of the 100 schools” would especially apply to them. They must “makethemselves heard.” We should encourage them also to do this loudly. If they would really “cryout,” the dogmatists could pack up their sticks and leave.

Friends
Ba Jin
On my recent travels, I came to realize still more fully the significance of the word “friend”.
Seven or eight days ago, I said to a friend whom I had just come to know, “I can’t help feelingembarrassed before my friends. You’re all so nice to me. I simply don’t know how to repay yourkindness.” I did not make this remark out of mere modesty and courtesy. I truly meant what Isaid. The next day, I said goodbye to this friend, not knowing if I could ever see him again. But thelittle warmth that he gave me has been keeping my heart throbbing with gratitude.
The length of my days will not be unlimited. However, whenever I look back on my brief past life, Ifind a beacon illuminating my soul and thereby lending a little brightness to my being. That beaconis friendship. I should be grateful to it because it has helped me keep alive up to now and clearaway the shadow left on me by my old family.
Many people forsake their friends in favor of their own families, or at least draw a line ofdemarcation between families and friends, considering the former to be many times moreimportant than the latter. That seems to be a matter of course. I have also seen with my own eyeshow some people abandon their friends as well as their own careers soon after they get married…
Friends are transient whereas family are lasting—that is the tenet, as I know, guiding the behaviorof many people. To me, that is utterly inconceivable. Without friends, I would have been reducedto I don’t know what a miserable creature.
Friends are my saviors. They give me things which it is beyond my family to give me. Thanks totheir fraternal love, assistance and encouragement, I have time and again been saved from fallinginto an abyss while on its verge. They have been enormously generous towards me.
There was a time when my life was miserable and gloomy. My friends then gave me in largequantities sympathy, love, joy and tears—things essential for existence. It is due to their bountifulfree gifts that I also have my share of warmth and happiness in my life.
I accepted their kindnesses quietly without ever saying a word of thanks and without ever doinganything in return. In spite of that, my friends never used the epithet “self-centered” whenreferred to me. They are only too generous towards me.
I visited many new places and met new friends on my recent trip. My time was mostly taken up bylooking around, listening, talking and walking. But I never ran into any trouble because my friendshad done their utmost to make sure that I would be short of nothing. Whatever new places Icalled at, I always felt at home as if I were back in my old residence in Shanghai which had beenalready been raged to the ground by Japanese troops.
No matter how hard up and frugal my friends themselves were, they would unstintingly share withme whatever they had, although they knew I would not be able to repay them for their kindness.Some, whom I did not even know by name, showed concern over my health and went aboutinquiring after me. It was not until they saw my suntanned face and arms that they began to smilea smile of relief.
All that was enough to move one to tears.
Some people believe that, without writing, I would lose my livelihood. One of my sympathizers, inan article published two months ago in the Guangzhou Republic Daily Supplement, gives a fullaccount of the conditions of my life. He also says that I would have nothing to live on once Ishould lay down my pen. That is not true at all. It has already been proved by recent travels thatmy friends would never let me suffer from cold and hunger even if I should go without writing asingle word. There are a great many kind-hearted people in the world who never attach undueimportance to themselves and their own families and who never place themselves and their familiesabove anything else. It is owing to them that I still survive and shall continue to survive for a longtime to come.
I owe my friends many, many kindnesses. How can I repay them? But, I understand, they don’tneed me to do that.
Recently I came across the following words in a book by a French philosopher:
One condition of life is consumption… Survival in this world is inseparable from generosity, withoutwhich we would perish and become dried-up from within. We must put forth flowers. Moralintegrity and unselfishness are the flowers of life.
Now so many flowers of life are in full bloom before my eyes. When can my life put forth flowers?Am I already dried-up from within?
A friend of mine says, “If I were a lamp, I would illuminate darkness with my light.”
I, however, don’t qualify for a bright lamp. Let me be a piece of firewood instead. I’ll radiate theheat that I have absorbed from the sun. I’ll burn myself to ashes to provide this human world witha little warmth.

http://img.bj.wezhan.cn/content/sitefiles/2082446/images/131496857930887607.jpg
Date Stones
Xiao Qian
Before I set out for the US, a former schoolmate of mine wrote me by airmail, asking me in allearnest to bring him some raw date stones. They were not heavy in weight, yet I was curiousabout their use.
At Philadelphia, shortly before staring out for my friend’s place, I called him up. So when I got offthe train at the destination, I found him already waiting for me at the station. It was about half acentury since we last met, and we were now both in our declining years.
After hugging each other, he asked me eagerly, “have you brought them with you?” I immediatelyfished out the date stones from my handbag. He fondled them in his palm as if they weresomething more valuable than pearls or agates.
Obviously he was just as childlike as before, when I asked about the use of the date stones, he putthem into his pocket and replied by way of fooling me deliberately, “You’ll understand soon.”
It was really a beautiful mountain city. As we drove on, an expanse of rich crimson up and downthe slope came into sight. In China a place like this would have been described as a maple city.After passing through several cols, my friend said pointing to a three- storied house amidst themaple trees, “here we are.” The car turned into a lawn and when it was three or four meters awayform the garage, its door automatically opened as if it recognized its own master.
My friend looked somewhat ill at ease when he told me this: At the time he bought this big house,his children had all been at school. Now they had their own homes and jobs. His wife, a biochemist,was a dietician at a research institute.
After assigning me a room on the second floor facing a lake, he showed me around his backgarden, which, though not too big, was exquisite and nicely arranged. The moment we sat downon a white bench close to a hedge, he asked me, “Don’t you find something here smacking of ournative place in China?” at this, I noticed a weeping willow, planted by himself, on either side of aflight of steps as well as a water-lily pond in the middle of the garden. He said with deep feeling, “When I planted the willows, my son was only five. Now he serves as head of chief mechanics in anuclear submarine. My daughter teaches at Harvard University. I’m happy with my family and mycareer. I own all modern household facilities I need. But I still feel something lacking. Maybe I’m a bittoo foolish. How come the older I become, the more I think of my homeland. Now I fullyunderstand the frame of mind of one residing in a place far away from home. I always think ofChangdian and Longfusi. Every time Christmas is celebrated here in America, I think of lunar Newyear back in China. I can never forget the date tree in the courtyard of the house on ZongbuHutong. That’s why I’ve asked you to bring me some date stones. I’ll try to plant them here.
Then he said pointing to a jumble of rockery standing in a corner of the garden, “Believe it or not,the rocks, hand-picked by me, were bought by the kilogram. I drove dozens of kilometers away tohaul them back in my car. Look, that’s Beihai in our home.”
Thereupon, we rose to our feet simultaneously and walked along a cobbled footpath beside thelawn towards the miniature Beihai. What a careful man my friend was! He had had the artificial hillinlaid with a clay pavilion and a red temple, with a white pagoda on top. He said he had bought thedecorative objects from China Town in San Francisco.
He also told me that on a moonlit night he and his wife would sit side by side on the bench recallinghow they had used to go boating on the Beihai Lake. Meanwhile, as I smelled the faint scent of thewater-lilies carried to us by the breeze, I felt as if the beautiful scene of a Chinese lotus pond wereflashing past my eyes.
The change of nationality doesn’t mean the change of national feeling. No other nation has such astrong attachment for the native land as we Chinese.

Heart in Hand
Lei Shuyan
If I could hold my heart upon my hand
Like a red strawberry on a thick green leaf
You would know at a glance
And say oh, how delightfully rosy
But if I really put it there
Like a red strawberry on a thick green leaf
It would surely be pecked apart by hateful birds
And then what should I say
How to show the heart-rending pain?

By the Mountain Path
Hsu Chih-Mo
One misty morning by the mountain path
The new-born hyacinth peeped out of the grass,
Midway I had gone with her, and there we parted.
Her white dress fluttered in the meadow green.
I did not speak; she did not say farewell;
And by the mountain path I paused and pondered.
“Disclose your secrets, is not this the season?”
Moist petals seemed to blame my hesitation.
Why hesitate? This is your final chance,
This misty morning by the mountain path.
I turned to her, collecting all my courage:
But why the trepidation in her eyes?
I choked my words and bowed my head
While fire and ice contended in my breast.
I suddenly saw my fate and saw her sorrows
In thick haze, by the solitary path.
That morning by the misty mountain path
The newborn hyacinth peeped out of the grass,
I saw her wander away and left her for ever,
Her white dress fluttering in the meadow green.

那一角只是血和泥;
我触到荇藻和水的微凉;
这黄河的水夹泥沙在指间滑出;
是那么细,那么软……现在只有蓬蒿;

With My Injured Hand
Dai Wangshu
With my injured hand,
I stroke this great land;
This corner has been reduced to ashes,
That is only blood and mud.
This tract of lake should be my native place,
(In spring, flowers bloom like a brocade screen along the dike;
The peculiar fragrance of tender willow twigs when broken.)
Where I can feel the rushes and cool water,
The snowy peaks of Changbai Mountains chill to the bone,
The waters of Huanghe River mixed with silt between my fingers.
Paddy fields south of the Yangtze River, in those years,
Your seedlings once slender and soft, now rotten.
South of the Five Ridges, blossoms fade in solitude,
Further, I touch the bitter water of the boatless South China Sea…
The invisible hand brushes across rivers and mountains,
Fingers stained with blood and ash, palms glued to darkness,
Only a distant corner still remain intact,
Warm, bright, solid, vital.
Over there, I run my injured hand gently,
As if caressing the soft hair of my sweetheart,
Or like a baby fondling its mother’s breast.
I summon all my strength to my palm
And press it there, with my love and hopes.
Only there is the sun, the spring,
That will dispel the darkness and bring about new life.
Only there can we live not like beasts of burden,
Nor die like ants…
There is the eternal China!

去山中浮动;
掉在你窗前;
In the Mountains
Hsu Chih-Mo
The courtyard is an oasis of quiet
Surrounded by the clamour of the town;
Shadows of pines are woven on the ground,
Bright and beauteous is the full moon.
Nobody knows in the mountains of tonight
What scenery there will be:
Pine-trees perhaps, and moonlight,
And deeper quiet.
O, to swim in the waves of the moon,
To become a gust of ethereal wind
And frolic in deep mountains
And rouse the spring-intoxicated pines!
I would puff a fresh green needle
Towards your window, so it would alight
Gently, like a tender sigh—
Your tranquil slumber not to stir.
On the Mountain
Xu Zhimo
All’s quiet in the courtyard,
Except for a lingering urban ditty;
Pine shadows have woven a rug—
Look, the moon is bright.
What is it like, I wonder,
On the mountain tonight:
There must be the moon and pines, too,
And quietness, only deeper.
I wish I could climb on a moonbeam
And turn into a puff of wind
To awake the pines from their spring hangover
And let them sway gently on the mountain.
I’d blow off a fresh green needle
And let it fall by your window;
Soft as a sigh—
It wouldn’t startle you in your sleep.

Fly in Autumn
T’ai Wang-Shu
Red colour of the leaves,
Yellow colour of the leaves,
Earth-grey colour of the leaves:
Afternoon outside the window!
With a pair of myriad-eyes,
The invalid fly strains them to dizziness;
(Such a stifling afternoon!...)
Listlessly scratches its head and scratches its belly.
Leaves, leaves, leaves,
An endless shower of rustling, rustling, drifting leaves.
The window-panes are cold as sheets of ice.
And the sun has faded,
Taking a single circular promenade,
Its feet become aware of their feebleness.
Red, yellow and earthly grey
Patterns in a giddy kaleidoscope.
A sound in the distance: is it the sound
Of an ancient temple-bell, or wind from the world’s end?
Drifting along the ground and floating aloft, the leaves are whirling,
A revolving wheel in a medley of red, grey, yellow.
The myriad-eyes grow slowly dim and blind.
What is pressing on those transparent wings?
The body’s light as the leaves: is it already
Upborne on the quills of an enormous bird?

A Satire on Myself
Lu Xun
Born under an unlucky star,
What could I do?
Afraid to turn a somersault,
Still my head received a blow.
My face hidden under a torn hat,
I cross the busy market.
Carrying wine in a leaking boat,
I sail downstream.
Eyebrows raised, coldly confronting
Accusing fingers of a thousand bullies.
Yet with my head bowed,
I’ll be an ox for children.
Secluded in my small attic,
I’ll enjoy my solitary state.
Who cares if it’s winter or summer?
Who cares if it’s autumn or spring?

Self-Mockery
Lu Xun
There’s nothing you can do about a hostile fate:
You bump your head before you even turn.
When in the street I pull my old hat down;
My leaky wine-boat drifts along the torrent.
Coolly I face a thousand pointing fingers,
Then bow to be an infant’s wiling ox.
Hiding in our little house, sufficient to ourselves,
I care not what the season is outside.

In Mockery of Myself
October 12, 1932
What can I ask for since I have a spell of bad-luck?
I’ve had my head knocked before I dare to turn over!
With a worn hat shading my face now I pass downtown,
And in midstream I sail with some wine in a leaky boat.
Fierce-browed, I coolly defy a thousand pointing fingers,
Head-bowed, like a willing ox I serve the youngsters.
Well, hiding myself in this world of my small attic,
Why should I bother about the cycling of seasons!

Self-Mockery
Lu Hsun
What can one ask once star-crossed under the Canopy’s spread?
Before venturing to turn over, I’ve already bumped my head.
A battered hat covering my face, I pass through the bustling town;
On board a weathered boat with wine, I drift in midstream rushing down.
Brows knit, I coolly defy a thousand pointing fingers of accusation;
Head bowed, I will serve the children like an ox with dedication.
I hide away in my own unified world in the small space upstairs;
Be it winter or summer, spring or autumn—who cares!

If a War is Raging Afar
Yu Guangzhong
If a war is raging afar, shall I stop my ears
Or shall I sit up and listen in shame?
Shall I stop my nose or breathe and breathe
The smothering smoke of troubled air? Shall I hear
You gasp lust and love or shall I hear the howitzers
Howl their sermons of truth? Mottos, medals, widows,
Can these glut the greedy palate of Death?
If far away a war is frying a nation
And fleets of tanks are ploughing plots in spring,
A child is crying by its mother’s corpse
Of a dumb and blind and deaf tomorrow;
If a nun is squatting on her fiery bier
With famished flesh singeing a despair
And black limbs ecstatic round Nirvana
As a hopeless gesture of hope. If
We are in bed, and they’re in the field
Sowing peace in acres of barbed wire,
Shall I feel guilty or shall I feel glad,
Glad that I’m making not war but love,
And in my arms writhes your nakedness, not the foe’s?
If afar there rages a war, and there we are—
You a merciful angel, clad all in white
And bent over the bed, with me in bed—
Without hand or foot or eye or without sex
In a field hospital that smells of blood.
If a war O such a war is raging afar,
My love, if right there we are.

Secretary-General's Message on International Mother Earth Day
Each year, on Mother Earth Day, we reflect on our relationship with the planet that supports us. The air we breathe, the water we drink and the soil that grows our food are part of a delicateglobal ecosystem that is increasingly under pressure from human activities. From tropical deforestation to depleted ocean fisheries, from growing freshwater shortages to the rapid decline of biodiversity and increasingly polluted skies and seas in many parts of the world, we see the heavy hand of humankind.
As our population grows we have to recognize that our consumption of the planet’s resources is unsustainable. We need a global transformation of attitude and practice. It is especially urgent to address how we generate the energy that drives our progress. Burning fossil fuels is the principal cause of climate change, which increasingly threatens prosperity and stability in all regions. That is why world leaders have pledged to reach a global legal climate agreement in 2015.
Action on climate change presents multiple opportunities to reset our relationship with Mother Earth and improve human well-being, especially for the poorest and most vulnerable. Sustainable energy for all can increase health, wealth and opportunity for billions of people, as can climate-smart agriculture, more efficient cities and better managed and protected forests.
To generate ambitious action on the ground and raise momentum for a new climate treaty in 2015, I am convening a Climate Summit in New York on 23 September this year. I am inviting Heads of State and Government along with private sector and civil society leaders to showcase initiatives and forge alliances that can help launch a sustainable future. But they need support and encouragement, for change is never easy. So today, on International Mother Earth Day, I appeal to all people everywhere to raise their voices. Speak out on behalf of this planet, our only home. Let us care for Mother Earth so she can continue to care for us as she has done for millennia.(ChinaDaily)

17、Bacon :Of Great Place
Francis Bacon
MEN in great place are thrice servants: servants of the sovereignor state; servants of fame; and servants of business. So as theyhave no freedom; neither in their persons, nor in their actions,nor in their times. It is a strange desire, to seek power and tolose liberty: or to seek power over others, and to lose power over a man's self. The rising untoplace is laborious; and by pains, men come to greater pains; and it is sometimes base; and byindignities, men come to dignities. The standing is slippery, and the regress is either a downfall, or atleast an eclipse, which is a melancholy thing. Nay,retire men cannot when they would, neither will they, when it were reason; but are impatient ofprivateness, even in age and sickness, which require the shadow; like old townsmen, that will be stillsitting at their street door, though thereby they offer age to scom. Certainly great persons hadneed to borrow other men's opinions, to think themselves happy; for if they judge by their ownfeeling, they cannot find it; but if they think with themselves, what other men think of them, andthat other men would fain be, as they are, then they are happy, as it were, by report; whenperhaps they find the contrary within. For they are the first, that find their own griefs, though theybe the last, that find their own faults. Certainly men in great fortunes are strangers to themselves,and while they are in the puzzle of business, they have no time to tend their health, either of bodyor mind. Illi mors gravis incubat, qui notus nimis omnibus, ignotus moritur sibi. In place, there islicense to do good, and evil; whereof the latter is a curse: for in evil, the best condition is not towin; the second, not to can. But power to do good, is the true and lawful end of aspiring. For goodthoughts (though God accept them) yet, towards men, are little better than good dreams, exceptthey be put in act; and that cannot be, without power and place, as the vantage, andcommanding ground. Merit and good works, is the end of man's motion; and conscience of thesame is the accomplishment of man's rest. For if a man can be partaker of God's theatre, he shalllikewise be partaker of God's rest. Et conversus Deus, ut aspiceret opera quae fecerunt manussuae, vidit quod omnia essent bona nimis; and then the sabbath. In the discharge of thy place, setbefore thee the best examples; for imitation is a globe of precepts. And after a time, set beforethee thine own example; and examine thyself strictly, whether thou didst not best at first. Neglectnot also the examples, of those that have carried themselves ill, in the same place; not to set offthyself, by taxing their memory, but to direct thyself, what to avoid. Reform therefore, withoutbravery, or scandal of former times and persons; but yet set it down to thyself, as well to creategood precedents, as to follow them. Reduce things to the first institution, and observe wherein,and how, they have degenerate; but yet ask counsel of both times; of the ancient time, what isbest; and of the latter time, what is fittest. Seek to make thy course regular, that men may knowbeforehand, what they may expect; but be not too positive and peremptory; and express thyselfwell, when thou digressest from thy rule. Preserve the right of thy place; but stir not questions ofjurisdiction; and rather assume thy right, in silence and de facto, than voice it with claims, andchallenges. Preserve likewise the rights of inferior places; and think it more honor, to direct in chief,than to be busy in all. Embrace and invite helps, and advices, touching the execution of thy place;and do not drive away such, as bring thee information, as meddlers; but accept of them in goodpart. The vices of authority are chiefly four: delays, corruption, roughness, and facility. For delays:give easy access; keep times appointed; go through with that which is in hand, and interlace notbusiness, but of necessity. For corruption: do not only bind thine own hands, or thy servants'hands, from taking, but bind the hands of suitors also, from offering. For integrity used doth theone; but integrity professed, and with a manifest detestation of bribery, doth the other. And avoidnot only the fault, but the suspicion. Whosoever is found variable, and changeth manifestlywithout manifest cause, giveth suspicion of corruption. Therefore always, when thou changestthine opinion or course, profess it plainly, and declare it, together with the reasons that move theeto change; and do not think to steal it. A servant or a favorite, if he be inward, and no otherapparent cause of esteem, is commonly thought, but a by-way to close corruption. Forroughness: it is a needless cause of discontent: severity breedeth fear, but roughness breedethhate. Even reproofs from authority, ought to be grave, and not taunting. As for facility: it is worsethan bribery. For bribes come but now and then; but if importunity, or idle respects, lead a man,he shall never be without. As Solomon saith, To respect persons is not good; for such a man willtransgress for a piece of bread. It is most true, that was anciently spoken, A place showeth theman. And it showeth some to the better, and some to the worse. Omnium consensu capax imperii,nisi imperasset, saith Tacitus of Galba; but of Vespasian he saith, Solus imperantium, Vespasianusmutatus in melius; though the one was meant of sufficiency, the other of manners, and affection.It is an assured sign of a worthy and generous spirit, whom honor amends. For honor is, or shouldbe, the place of virtue; and as in nature, things move violently to their place, and calmly in theirplace, so virtue in ambition is violent, in authority settled and calm. All rising to great place is by awinding star; and if there be factions, it is good to side a man's self, whilst he is in the rising, and tobalance himself when he is placed. Use the memory of thy predecessor, fairly and tenderly; for ifthou dost not, it is a debt will sure be paid when thou art gone. If thou have colleagues, respectthem, and rather call them, when they look not for it, than exclude them, when they have reasonto look to be called. Be not too sensible, or too remembering, of thy place in conversation, andprivate answers to suitors; but let it rather be said, When he sits in place, he is another man.

19、Byron:Song for the Luddites
Song for the Luddites
George Gordon Byron
1
As the liberty lads o’er the sea
Bought their freedom, and cheaply, with blood,
So we, boys, we
Will die fighting, or live free,
And down with all kings but King Ludd!
2
When the web that we weave is complete,
And the shuttle exchanged for the sword,
We will fling the winding sheet
O’er the despot at our feet,
And dye it deep in the gore he has poured.
3
Though black as his heart its hue,
Since his veins are corrupted to mud,
Yet this is the dew
Which the tree shall renew
Of Liberty, planted by Ludd!
付出了鲜血,买到了自由;

倾听空谷的松籁;
Mountains
Hsu Chih-Mo
I look up at the old grey mountains;
They have no words.
Sunshine projects my littleness,
Slender grasses are under my feet.
Alone I pause by the wood,
Quietly I listen to the murmuring pines;
White clouds drift over the sky
And vanish at a glance.
A Song of Dead Leaves
Hsü Chih-mo
A rustling against the balustrade
(As I drift ever nearer the realm of dreams)
I tell myself, these are her footsteps at last—
In this still night.
The sound of tapping here at my window—
(I press ever closer the frontier of sleep)
She must be here to plague me again—and see,
I remain calm!
The sound of breathing draws near my bed
And (half-dreaming, half in a daze) I cry,
“You will never understand me—what good then
To hurt me more!”
The sound of a sign falls by my pillow
(I cling now to the dream I am dreaming)
“I wronged you” you say—now your hot tears
Scalding me cheek!
These noises trouble me dream-locked spirit
(In the garden the dead leaves dance, flurries before the breeze)
My dream ends, sleep clears, I find my tormentor
Is only the voice of autumn!
(Cyril Birch
P’i-pa in Midnight Alley
Hsü Chih-mo
Startled again from dreams by this p’i-pa in depth of night!
Whose is the sorrowing
Whose the fingers
That like a chill breeze, a dismal rain, an eddy of falling petals
Through the stillness of night
Through the shades of slumber
Quiver the taut strings, plucking at random note after note
To blend into still night, empty street,
Willow hung with waning moon
—Ah, dying moon’s half-circle, image of fading hope—while he
Of the cap bursting its seams
Of the body iron-chained
Leaps and laughs like a maniac along the path of time.
“It’s over,” he says, “blow out your lamp.”
She waits beyond the grave
Waits for your kiss, waits for your kiss, waits for your kiss.
(Cyril Birch
Sea Rhyme
Hsü Chih-mo
I
“Maiden, solitary maiden:
Why do you linger here
On the dusk-darkened shore?
Maiden, maiden, turn back!”
“Ah no, I do not please,
For love of the evening breeze.”—
On the sand of the shore, against sunset clouds
A girl with wind-tossed hair
Wanders at ease.
II
“Maiden with streaming hair:
Why do you roam at will
Here by the ocean chill?
Maiden, maiden, turn back!”
“Ah no, first hear me sing,
Sea wave accompanying.”—
In the light of the stars, the cool wind carries
The high clear voice of a girl
Rising, falling.
III
“Maiden, maiden so daring:
A black curtain rips at edge of sky,
Storm tides threaten, rearing high—
Maiden, maiden, turn back!
“Ah no, see me dance free as air,
As gulls in the spray disappear.”—
In the fall of night, on sand of shore
Tenuously a shadow whirls
Forsaken there.
IV
“Hear now the raging ocean’s roar,
Maiden, maiden, turn back!
See the waves spring like beasts at the shore,
Maiden, maiden, turn back!”
“Ah no, the waves turn not for me,
I love the haul and plunge of the sea!”
In chant of the tide, in glow of wave
Through spume and spray in panic she turns
Stumblingly.
这海边再没有光芒;
V
“Maiden, where are you, maiden?
Where now your song’s pellucid trace,
Your dancing limbs of slender grace,
Where are you, maiden so daring?”
Black night swallows the starglow,
At sea’s edge all light is hidden
Tides abolish shore,
On shore, no sign of maiden—
No sign of maiden.

22、Byron :My Soul is Dark
My Soul is Dark
George Gordon Byron
1
My soul is dark – Oh! quickly string
The harp I yet can brook to hear;
And let thy gentle fingers fling
Its melting murmurs o’er mine ear.
If in this heart a hope be dear,
That sound shall charm it forth again:
If in these eyes there lurk a tear,
‘Twill flow, and cease to burn my brain.
2
But bid the strain be wild and deep,
Nor let thy notes of joy be first:
I tell thee, minstrel, I must weep,
Or else this heavy heart will burst;
For it hath been by sorrow nursed,
And ached in sleepless silence long;
And now ’tis doomed to know the worst,
And break at once – or yield to song.

不然,这沉重的心就要爆裂;
又在失眠的静寂里痛得久长;

Euthanasia
George Gordon Byron
When Time, or soon or late, shall bring
The dreamless sleep that lulls the dead
Oblivion! may thy languid wing
Wave gentle o’er my dying bed!
No band of friends or heirs be there,
To weep, or wish, the coming blow:
No maiden, wish dishevelled hair,
To feel, or feign, decorous woe.
But silent let me sink to Earth,
With no officious mourners near
I would not mar one hour of mirth,
No startle Friendship with a fear.
Yet Love, if Love in such an hour
Could nobly check its useless sighs,
Might then exert its latest power
In her who lives, and him who dies.
’Twere sweet, my Psyche! to the last
Thy features still serene to see:
Forgetful of its struggles past,
E’en Pain itself should smile on thee.
But vain the wish — for beauty still
Will shrink, as shrinks the ebbing breath;
And woman’s tears, produced at will,
Deceive in life, unman in death.
Then lonely be my latest hour,
Without regret, without a groan;
For thousands Death hath ceased to lower,
And pain been transient or unknown.
“Aye, but to die, and go,” alas!
Where all have gone, and all must go!
To be the nothing that I was
Ere born to life and living woe!
Count o’er the joys thine hours have seen
Count o’er thy days from anguish free
And know, whatever thou hast been,
’Tis something better not to be.

And Thou Art Dead, As Young and Fair
George Gordon Byron
And thou art dead, as young and fair
As aught of mortal birth;
And form so soft and charms so rare
Too soon returned to Earth!
Though Earth received them in her bed,
And o’er the spot the crowd may tread
In carelessness or mirth,
There is an eye which could not brook
A moment on that grave to look.
I will not ask where thou liest low,
Nor gaze upon the spot;
There flowers or weeds at will may grow,
So I behold them not:
It is enough for me to prove
That what I loved and long must love
Like common earth can rot;
To me there needs no stone to tell
’Tis Nothing that I loved so well.
Yet did I love thee to the last,
As fervently as thou,
Who didst not change through all the past
And canst not alter now.
The love where Death has set his seal
Nor age can chill, nor rival steal,
Nor falsehood disavow:
And, what were worse, thou canst not see
Or wrong, or change, or fault in me.
The better days of life were ours;
The worst can be but mine:
The sun that cheers, the storm that lowers,
Shall never more be thine.
The silence of that dreamless sleep
I envy now too much to weep;
Nor need I to repine,
That all those charms have passed away
I might have watched through long decay.
The flower in ripened bloom unmatched
Must fall the earliest prey;
Though by no hand untimely snatched,
The leaves must drop away:
And yet it were a greater grief
To watch it withering, leaf by leaf,
Than see it plucked to-day;
Since earthly eye but ill can bear
To trace the change to foul from fair.
I know not if I could have borne
To see thy beauties fade;
The night that followed such a morn
Had worn a deeper shade:
Thy day without a cloud hath past,
And thou wert lovely to the last,
Extinguished, not decayed;
As stars that shoot along the sky
Shine brightest as they fall from high.
As once I wept, if I could weep,
My tears might well be shed,
To think I was not near, to keep
One vigil o’er thy bed:
To gaze, how fondly! on thy face,
To fold thee in a faint embrace,
Uphold thy drooping head;
And show that love, however vain,
Nor thou nor I can feel again.
Yet how much less it were to gain,
Though thou hast left me free,
The loveliest things that still remain
Than thus remember thee!
The all of thine that cannot die
Through dark and dread Eternity
Returns again to me,
And more thy buried love endears
Than aught, except its living years.

没有人比得上你;
竟和泥土一样烂掉;
一如你爱我那般;
负心又怎样抹掉;
苦时只有我承受;
我已羡慕的不再哭泣;
也会随时间萎缩;
岂不更令人悲伤;
你熄灭了,而不是枯凋;
我不曾有一次的探望;
你的头靠着我永眠;
会重回到我心中;

In a Decade
Bei Dao
On the forsaken land
Years, tangled with yoke bells,
Sounded all night through. Roads rocked,
Gasps, beneath burdens, set to music,
Were sung far and wide.
Amid curses a woman’s necklace
Rose prophetically into the night sky.
The luminous clockface struck random hours.
Honest time, like an iron railing,
Let no one pass
But wind trimmed by dry twigs.
Flowers that had once bloomed only in books
Were immured forever, transformed into truth’s mistress.
The lamps shattered just the previous day
Dazzled blind men
Until the moment of execution,
When their eyes, suddenly opened,
Retained the murderers’ final image.

Ancient Temple
Bei Dao
Faded chimes
Woven into cobwebs
through the columns’ crevices,
Have proliferated into innumerable year-rings
Without memories, the stones
Transmit echoes in the valley;
The stones are without memories.
When the footpath wound away from here
The dragons and strange birds also flew,
Bearing the mute bells from the eaves
The weeds grow year by year,
Indifferent, careless whether they submit
To monks’ cloth shoes
Or the wind.
The broken steles and their worn legends
Are decipherable as if only in a consuming fire.
perhaps a glance from the living will bring
The turtles back to life
And, bearing their heavy load of secrets,
They will crawl out across the threshold.
Ancient Temple
Bei Dao
The dying sound of a bell
Knits a spider web, spreading into annual ringing
Circle after circle of crevices in the wood column
The stones have no memory
Stones that once launched echoes in the hazy valley
Have no memory
When the path made a detour away from here
Dragons and monstrous birds also flew away
Lifting the hoarse bells right off the eaves
Along with unrecorded legends
The inscriptions on the wall have become so weathered
That only in a huge conflagration
Would they be made recognizable
Wild grass grows there
Once a year, so indifferent
It doesn’t care whether the owners it submits to
Are the cloth shoes of the monks
Or just the wind
Fragmentary tombstones support the sky
Perhaps in response to a living person’s sight
The tortoise might be resurrected
With a heavy secret on its back
And creep across the threshold

24、Thomas Hardy :I Look into My Glass
I Look into my glass,
And view my wasting skin,
And say, ‘Would God it came to pass
My heart had shrunk as thin!’
For then, I, undistrest
By hearts grown cold to me,
Could lonely wait my endless rest
With equanimity.
But Time, to make me grieve,
Past steals, lets past abide;
And shakes this fragile frame at eve
With throbbings of noontide.

Of old two letters of her name;
Part seemed she of the effulgent thought
Whence that high singer’s rapture came.

Immortal light illumes the lay,
But from the letters of her name
The radiance has died away.

Message on World Water Day
22 March 2015
This year, as the UN prepares to adopt a new post-2015sustainable development agenda in September, World WaterDay highlights the essential and interconnected role of water.We rely on water for public health and equitable progress, it is essential for food and energysecurity, and it underpins the functioning of industries.
The onset of climate change, growing demand on finite water resources from agriculture, industryand cities, and increasing pollution in many areas are hastening a water crisis that can only beaddressed by cross-sectoral, holistic planning and policies – internationally, regionally and globally.
Among the most urgent issues are access to safe drinking water and sanitation. Despite progressunder the Millennium Development Goals, adopted in 2000, some 750 million people – more thanone in ten of the world’s population – remain without access to an improved water supply. Womenand children, in particular, are affected by this lack, as not only is their health compromised, butconsiderable hours are wasted in the unproductive – and sometimes dangerous – business ofcollecting water.
The statistics on sanitation are even less encouraging. Some 2.5 billion people still live withoutimproved sanitation, and a billion people practice open defecation, making sanitation the leastsuccessful area of the MDGs. We cannot achieve a world of dignity, health and prosperity for alluntil we address this urgent need.
Our sustainable future is also jeopardized by climate change, which is why United Nations MemberStates are working hard towards a meaningful, universal climate agreement this December in Paris.Over the coming years, greenhouse gas emissions will have to significantly decline in order to avertthe worst impacts of climate change, which include changed weather patterns and the threat ofwater scarcity in large parts of the world.
To address the many challenges related to water, we must work in a spirit of urgent cooperation,open to new ideas and innovation, and prepared to share the solutions that we all need for asustainable future. If we do so, we can end poverty, promote global prosperity and well-being,protect the environment and withstand the threat of climate change.

Secretary-General's Message on InternationalMother Earth Day
Each year, on Mother Earth Day, we reflect on our relationshipwith the planet that supports us. The air we breathe, the waterwe drink and the soil that grows our food are part of a delicateglobal ecosystem that is increasingly under pressure fromhuman activities. From tropical deforestation to depleted oceanfisheries, from growing freshwater shortages to the rapid declineof biodiversity and increasingly polluted skies and seas in manyparts of the world, we see the heavy hand of humankind.
As our population grows we have to recognize that our consumption of the planet’s resources isunsustainable. We need a global transformation of attitude and practice. It is especially urgent toaddress how we generate the energy that drives our progress. Burning fossil fuels is the principalcause of climate change, which increasingly threatens prosperity and stability in all regions. That iswhy world leaders have pledged to reach a global legal climate agreement in 2015.
Action on climate change presents multiple opportunities to reset our relationship with MotherEarth and improve human well-being, especially for the poorest and most vulnerable. Sustainableenergy for all can increase health, wealth and opportunity for billions of people, as can climate-smart agriculture, more efficient cities and better managed and protected forests.
To generate ambitious action on the ground and raise momentum for a new climate treaty in2015, I am convening a Climate Summit in New York on 23 September this year. I am invitingHeads of State and Government along with private sector and civil society leaders to showcaseinitiatives and forge alliances that can help launch a sustainable future. But they need support andencouragement, for change is never easy. So today, on International Mother Earth Day, I appealto all people everywhere to raise their voices. Speak out on behalf of this planet, our only home.Let us care for Mother Earth so she can continue to care for us as she has done for millennia.(ChinaDaily)

“Our Family”
“家”
Chinese New Year is a time to celebrate with our families. It is atime to reflect on the blessings of having a family – to thank ourelders for what they have done for us, to appreciate ourspouses, to shower love on our children. It is a time to enjoythe simple goodness of family.
So even if we may be busy, travelling or living in far flung lands, unable to come together physicallyfor the New Year reunion, let us make the effort to connect with one another. On this mostimportant festival in the lunar calendar, let us pause and remind ourselves of what truly matters inlife, of what it means to belong to a family.
The Government is doing all it can to help people build strong families. We are encouragingcouples to have more children. The Marriage and Parenthood Package will support them, as willmore affordable childcare and pre-schools. This year, we look forward to celebrating the birth ofmany Jubilee babies. We are encouraging three-generation families to stay close-knit, and makingit easier for young couples setting up home to live close to their parents, through targeted housinggrants. The Pioneer Generation Package, Silver Support and MediShield Life will lighten the burdenon families taking care of elderly parents.
Beyond our immediate family and relatives, we should also strengthen our larger national family.Singaporeans need to take care of one another, and especially of fellow citizens who are vulnerableor less fortunate. We are strengthening our social safety nets. We have made it easier for low-income families to own their homes, introduced MediShield Life to give more protection againstlarge hospital bills, reviewed CPF Life to help families better prepare for retirement, and expandedWorkfare to support low-income workers and their families. The state and the community arebearing more risk on behalf of individuals, to give those who need help more peace of mind. Weare all in this together.
We are doing all this to help our families stay together, not to supplant the role that families play. Our family ties must not weaken, unlike what we have seen in other societies where the state hastaken on more responsibility. We must not let this happen in Singapore – either to our individualfamilies, or to our larger national family.
Strong families are the bedrock of our society. Family members not only take care of each other. They laugh and cry together. Every member is shaped by every other. Our families inspire us tobe better, not just for ourselves but for each other. Our families are always there for us, insickness and in health, for better or for worse.
Generous social policies and grants by themselves do not grow strong or happy families. A family isnot just about whom we are related to, but how we relate to each other. Therefore, let us makethe effort to build strong families – to spend time with each other, nurture our children, respectand care for our elderly parents, and through our deeds help those in greater need.
If each of us plays our part, Singapore will continue to prosper and do well, not just economically,but as a harmonious and cohesive national family, diverse yet one.

29、Bryan Waller Procter:Life
Bryan Waller Procter
We are born; we laugh; we weep;
We love; we droop; we die!
Ah! wherefore do we laugh or weep?
Why do we live, or die?
Who knows that secret deep?
Alas, not I!
Why doth the violet spring
Unseen by human eye?
Why do the radiant seasons bring
Sweet thoughts that quickly fly?
Why do our fond hearts cling
To things that die?
We toil,—through pain and wrong;
We fight,—and fly;
We love; we lose; and then, ere long,
Stone-dead we lie.
O life! is all thy song
我们诞生;我们欢笑;我们流泪;
我们苦干,——经历痛苦与屈辱;
我们战斗——又飞翔;

"I have been reflecting deeply about my presidency and about the forty years in which my life has been inextricably bound to FIFA and the great sport of football. I cherish FIFA more than anything and I want to do only what is best for FIFA and for football. I felt compelled to stand for re-election, as I believed that this was the best thing for the organization. That election is over but FIFA's challenges are not. FIFA needs a profound overhaul.
"While I have a mandate from the membership of FIFA, I do not feel that I have a mandate from the entire world of football -- the fans, the players, the clubs, the people who live, breathe and love football as much as we all do at FIFA.
"Therefore, I have decided to lay down my mandate at an extraordinary elective Congress. I will continue to exercise my functions as FIFA President until that election.
"The next ordinary FIFA Congress will take place on 13 May 2016 in Mexico City. This would create unnecessary delay and I will urge the Executive Committee to organize an Extraordinary Congress for the election of my successor at the earliest opportunity. This will need to be done in line with FIFA's statutes and we must allow enough time for the best candidates to present themselves and to campaign.
"Since I shall not be a candidate, and am therefore now free from the constraints that elections inevitably impose, I shall be able to focus on driving far-reaching, fundamental reforms that transcend our previous efforts. For years, we have worked hard to put in place administrative reforms, but it is plain to me that while these must continue, they are not enough.
"The Executive Committee includes representatives of confederations over whom we have no control, but for whose actions FIFA is held responsible. We need deep-rooted structural change. The size of the Executive Committee must be reduced and its members should be elected through the FIFA Congress. The integrity checks for all Executive Committee members must be organised centrally through FIFA and not through the confederations. We need term limits not only for the president but for all members of the Executive Committee.
"I have fought for these changes before and, as everyone knows, my efforts have been blocked.
"This time, I will succeed.
"I cannot do this alone. I have asked Domenico Scala to oversee the introduction and implementation of these and other measures. Mr. Scala is the Independent Chairman of our Audit and Compliance Committee elected by the FIFA Congress. He is also the Chairman of the ad hoc Electoral Committee and, as such, he will oversee the election of my successor. Mr. Scala enjoys the confidence of a wide range of constituents within and outside of FIFA and has all the knowledge and experience necessary to help tackle these major reforms.
"It is my deep care for FIFA and its interests, which I hold very dear, that has led me to take this decision. I would like to thank those who have always supported me in a constructive and loyal manner as President of FIFA and who have done so much for the game that we all love.
What matters to me more than anything is that when all of this is over, football is the winner."
